As somebody in a job requiring hearing protection, I wear headphones 8-10 hours a day. Which means I listen to a LOT of content. I made the jump from exclusively listening to music to adding in a few podcasts around two years ago; now I’ve binged entire back catalogs of over a dozen shows, and listened to some episodes of several others.
Since podcasts are a thing now, and somebody out there will always be looking for recommendations, I figured I’d throw a list of some of my favorite shows out to the interwebs. This list is in no particular order, because all of these podcasts are fantastic.
Have you ever wondered about the Lizard Illuminati? How about Harriet Tubman, World War I, or The Mandela Effect? Perhaps you’re more interested in darker topics, such as The Shadow People, The Jonestown Massacre, and John Wayne Gacy?
Dan Cummins covers all those topics and so much more, with a comedic commentary containing a crazy cast of characters! No topics are off limits, and with episodes running around 1-2 hours, every topic gets thoroughly sucked. If you have a dark sense of humor and enjoy learning about anything and everything, come join the Cult of the Curious! Do it. Now.
Hosted by producers (and 2/3 of the rock band As We Ascend) Jake Jones and Robert Venable, the Turned Up podcast dives deep into the music industry. With episodes detailing everything from touring to the science of sound to music conspiracy theories to songwriting, this podcast is a tell-all about everything music related. With most episodes lasting around 45 minutes, this podcast is perfect for a commute (or working in a guitar factory).
Nominated for “best music podcast” in the very first iHeartRadio podcast awards, Jake and Robert are killing it in the podcast world. If you’re a fan of good music, interesting facts, and dad jokes, definitely tune in to Turned Up.
Adam Theroux, founder of the nonprofit organization Good People Doing Good, recently started this show to reveal the positivity in everything. Sharing uplifting stories and random fun facts with the energy of Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, Adam’s views on life are incredibly contagious. With episodes around 15-30 minutes in length, Aggressively Positive is the perfect show to jump start your day and restore your faith in humanity.
Sharing both paranormal and true crime stories every episode, Em Schulz and Christine Schiefer are the dream team of the podcasting world. Since 2017, their awkward personal anecdotes mixed in with their chilling stories, Christine’s love of wine, and the cutest puppy mascot named Gio have captivated thousands of listeners. With their 2019 already filled with live podcast dates, Em and Christine are only getting better and creating more fun life updates to share.
Although this show has been around since October of 2009, it only recently popped up on my radar. Created by Kevin Allison, this one started as a live show where people tell stories they never thought they’d share. Every person has stories, and this podcast highlights an abundance of hilarious and heartwarming tales from a variety of people. With so many stories and odd life lessons, along with Kevin’s reminder to “take a risk” at the end of every episode, there’s no way to go wrong with RISK!
